This trek takes you through two of the most beautiful lakes in India- Tso Kar and Tso Moriri. Spread over 120 square kilometres, Tso Moriri is the largest high-altitude lake that is entirely within India. This Ladakhi wonder is the biggest reward of this trek. One trudges through seven mountain passes, more than 10 river-crossings and arid lands to get there. Throughout the 6-day trail, trekkers have the company of landscapes that are so outlandish that they don’t seem to belong from this world. It’s a starkly beautiful trail that no other trek can replicate.
It is highly recommended that you rest for a day at Leh to acclimatise (not only during this trek, but during any trek in Ladakh). Walk around the Leh town to get yourself better acclimatised. This should be taken more seriously by those planning to reach Leh via flight.
Post breakfast drive to Rumtse via Leh-Manali highway. The first phase of trekking starts from Rumtse to Kyamar (4000 m). We will come across a pasture valley where the nomadic herders or Changpas bring their yaks & goats for grazing. Trek on the ancient salt lake route and settle for an overnight camp at Kyamar.
From Kyamar, trek towards Tisaling. You will come across the Kumur La pass( 4770 m). At the top of the Kumur La, you can watch the breathtaking view of the snow-capped peaks of Ladakh including that of Mt. Kangyatse.
We will start an early morning trek towards Pangunagu. While trekking, halt at the Shibuk La pass and enjoy the panoramic view of the Tsokar lake. The Tsokar lake attracts a lot of migratory birds. After crossing the lake, we will enter the Rupshu valley. The next stop of the trek is Pangunagu where we can camp for the night.
We will do bird watching and photography while walking near the Tsokar lake. Just at the end of the trail, we can take a right turn to enter the Nuruchan village. Retire at the tents for an overnight stay.
This day is strictly dedicated to trekking along the highest elevation of the entire trek. We will come across the major passes like Horlam Kongka La and Kyamayuri La. Following this, we will reach Gyamabarma where you will stay for the night.
Start the trek over Yalung Nyau La, the highest pass on the trail. From the top of the pass, we will enjoy the mesmerizing views of western Tibetan peaks. The pass will lead to Korzok, which is the only settlement on the banks of Tsomoriri Lake. On arrival, we will be visiting the Korzak monastery. Overnight stay in tents.
Drive to Leh along the Indus river, which is around 220 km from Korzok. On the way, visit the Chumathang hot springs which are believed to cure medical ailments. Arrive in Leh by evening and check in the hotel for a night stay and dinner.
Today we depart for home with some happy memories.
