Sar Pass is one of the best trek for your debut into the awesome world of Himalayan treks. It offers all kind of terrain ranging from forests, meadows, quaint villages and views of snow-capped mountains around! Sar Pass is located in the mystical Parvati Valley of Himachal Pradesh. It connects Kalga and Kasol – two major destinations for backpackers. ‘Sar’ means lake in the local language. There is a beautiful lake surrounded by meadows at 13,700 feet and hence the name Sar Pass.
We start trekking early in the morning from Kalga village. The trail winds up with a gentle gradient through dense forests. As we gain some elevation, we will be able to see a huge glacier in the valley. We would come across settlements of local shepherds where we can try out some milk based products like khowa and paneer. After 4 to 5 hours we will reach Bhadang, which is our camping place for the night.
As we move higher, we will see amazing views of rivers flowing at the bottom of valleys. If we are lucky, we will be able to spot Kasturi Deers. An hour into the trek, we will come across a section of loose rocks. Towards the end, the trail winds up steeply in dense deodar forest which will get us to Biskhidi, our home for the night. We can enjoy the warmth of campfire here with some stories and activities.
We will trek around 6 hours and reach above the tree line into the meadows. The ascent is fairly steep. Sar pass is located at 4200 meters and there is a beautiful high altitude lake where we will camp for the night. There will be vast meadow with huge snow-capped peaks around us.
We will begin the descent into the forests again. Very soon we will get a glimpse of Kasol. After 5 hours, we will reach a meadow between forests, known as Min Thach. We will camp here for the night.
It is a complete downhill walk to Graham Village through forests which would take us around 4 hours. The night stay would be in guest houses where basic facilities are available. Unwind here and enjoy our last night in the mountains.
The trek is again downhill through beautiful forests. We will cross wooden bridges installed by villagers over rivers and streams. If we are lucky we will be able to spot Ibex here. After reaching Kasol, depart for home or continue your stay onwards. The trek ends with some happy memories.
